This could be the long time Mac user in me, but I naively assumed that the auto correct preference in settings would be something close to system wide in Windows 10, which apparently, it is not. Does it only work in certain Win apps? Perhaps only the office suite, or only apps like Xbox, Store, etc.

It’s not working in notepad or mail, which are currently the only two win apps that I actually use, so it’s effectively non existent on my system, unless there’s something wrong, which I don’t think there is. Notepad is a simple text-editing program that allows minimal formatting and limited to simple text entry. Meanwhile, the autocorrect in Windows 10 can be enabled or disabled by following the steps below:. Each program has their own autocorrect features, from Windows built-in applications, web browsers, to installed applications.

We suggest that you contact the application support to know more about their features. Feel free to post back if you need further assistance. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Right, gotcha Just looking for clarification as to where exactly it’s suppose to be working so that I can determine whether or not there is actually a problem with my system. Autocorrect is a spell checking feature when you type words anywhere in Windows It underlines the misspelled words when not found in the dictionary or correcting mistyped words like any other spell checker.

The usefulness depends on what kind of device you’re using. It’s useful when you use Edge and other application, but depending on the app developers if they will use Autocorrect. If you’re using a desktop, it can interfere or overlap with apps that use spell checkers.

If you’re using a Windows 10 phone or tablet, it will be very handy. That’s correct. It simply makes you aware of what you’re typing. The “Autocorrect misspelled words” corrects words that were typed incorrectly but recognizable by the feature. For example the word “the” that is often mistype as “teh. See picture below:. I’m also new to Windows and have been going nuts trying to figure out what I am doing worng. Got the red underline all right but no autocorrect.

I am a lousy typist. I often use a Chromebook which cheerfully autocorrects everything for me. All I have to do is make sure it doesn’t substitute nonsense words, but I can mostly type madly and not have to go back to correct every underline. Sure highlighting works but not what I want! Lots of people want to turn it off. We want to turn it on! There are several ways to troubleshoot issues with the Auto-correct misspelled words feature in Windows To better assist you, we need the answers to the following questions:.

Try Notepad. You and others have said it’s built into Windows and operates in it’s built in applications. If that is true, why isn’t it highlighting in Notepad? Thanks for getting back to me, Jefferson. Click and done. Below the top box is another with 3 other choices: add to dictionary; ask Google for suggestions I use Chrome ; search Google for the misspelled word. The issue happens with absolutely everything. I just opened the Edge browser and tried a few things.

The highlighter works fine everywhere, but nothing will autocorrect. As I said earlier, I am not a great typist. I taught myself to sort-of touch type, but I like to try to type almost as fast as I think.

Autocorrect is great for me because a slight misstroke is gone before I even notice it. Sure, I have to double check myself, but it’s nowhere near as tedious as having to go back through every paragraph correcting all the little red lines. D0gknees remarked on Notepad. I opened and tried it. Not only does not autocorrect, does not highlight either.

Same with Wordpad: no autocorrect, not even highlight red squiggly underline. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Search the community and support articles Windows Windows 10 Search Community member.

Perhaps only the office suite, or only apps like Xbox, Store, etc It’s not working in notepad or mail, which are currently the only two win apps that I actually use, so it’s effectively non existent on my system, unless there’s something wrong, which I don’t think there is.

Spellcheck seems to work fine, system wide, just not autocorrect. Would be awfully nice to have it in Mail, Chrome, Notepad, etc. Should I be looking for solutions, or is this just how it is on a Win machine?

The settings are all correct turned on and a registry check didn’t return any errors. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit.

How to Edit the Autocorrect Dictionary in Windows 10 | Laptop Mag

But you can get autocorrect on your PC! Let’s look at how to use autocorrect on Windows 10 through two different methods. Since the April Update, Windows 10 has featured its own autocorrect functionality, even for hardware keyboards.

This is a simple toggle that you can use to catch basic mistakes and is a good first option to try. In the list, scroll down to the Hardware keyboard section. Here, enable the Autocorrect misspelled words as I type slider. After you do this, Windows will fix common typos as you enter text anywhere on the system. In our testing, this includes changing “teh” to “the” and “mispell” to “misspell”, for example. Unlike your mobile phone keyboard, it won’t figure out what word you were trying to type based on the keys you hit; it only resolves specific typos to their correct word.

It also doesn’t fix errors like having two letters in a row “CApitalized” or adding extra letters, such as “sooon”. If you don’t want an intensive autocorrect function, start by enabling this and see if it helps you enough.

Move onto the second option if you’re looking for something more. AutoHotkey is a powerful Windows scripting tool that you can use for all sorts of purposes. For instance, you can assign system commands to a keyboard shortcut, expand text to type large snippets with a few characters, reassign keyboard keys, and much more.

See our introduction to AutoHotkey if you’re interested in learning more. We’ll walk you through how to use autocorrect with AutoHotkey, even if you’re not familiar with the tool. To start, download AutoHotkey and install it on your system. Once that’s done, you’re ready to start using scripts with the software.

Thankfully, you don’t have to set up autocorrect yourself. This AutoCorrect script by Jim Biancolo has been around since , but still works fine since typos don’t really change with time. By default, Windows will prompt you to save this as a TXT file.

In the Save As dialog, make sure to remove the. If you do it correctly, when you view the icon in File Explorer, it will show as a white page with an H on it. You can save the script anywhere on your computer and simply double-click to run it. When you do, the script will start running with no alert, aside from placing an AutoHotkey icon in your System tray at the bottom-right of the screen. However, for a set-and-forget autocorrect app, you should move the file into your startup folder.

That way, it will run every time you boot your computer so you don’t have to launch it manually. See our guide to the Windows 10 startup folder for more help with this. Once you have the script running and placed into the startup folder if you want it to run all the time , it will start auto-correcting text everywhere you type on your computer.

That’s all you need to take advantage of it, but you can view the script if you’re interested in what it does, or even tweak it to your liking for better results. Unfortunately, autocorrect on Windows doesn’t work across all your device’s apps and can even interfere with third-party grammar and spelling programs. It’s also not the most advanced spell check software, meaning you’re often left with mistakes in your work or even introduce errors through autocorrect.

It can be incredibly frustrating if you aren’t writing in English or are using newer words its dictionary doesn’t yet recognize. Luckily, you can turn off autocorrect on Windows to prevent these issues.

Here’s how to do it. Click the Windows “Start” icon and scroll the apps list until you see “Settings. Click the “Autocorrect misspelled words” and “Highlight misspelled words” toggles to turn the features off.

More Button Icon Circle with three horizontal dots. It indicates a way to see more nav menu items inside the site menu by triggering the side menu to open and close.
